Obedience to God's Word

81 My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

82 Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

83 For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

84 How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?

85 The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law.

86 All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.

87 They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.

88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

In your unfailing love preserve my life, that I may obey the statutes of your mouth. —Psalm 119:88

In the end it does not matter how often we read through the Bible, how many verses we memorize, how many stories we recall, how much theology we learn. What does matter is how much we obey and keep what God has taught us in his written Word and through his personal Word, Jesus Christ. Jesus says, “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them” (John 14:21).

Obedience honors the love of our Father in heaven and the presence of Christ in our hearts! In God’s strength it results in a life that pleases God, supplies peace in relationships, joy in serving, comfort in suffering, relief from guilt, and assurance of blessing.

But here is my struggle. Do I truly love God’s law enough to unite my heart to it? I make many excuses: it’s too hard; it conflicts with what I want; it won’t make me happy; nobody else is doing it; it really doesn’t matter much.

The devil gladly supports all the excuses we can come up with, but we don’t have to live that way. Whenever you open your Bible, ask God the Holy Spirit, its author, to give you power to understand and obey what his Word tells you.
